Experimental Evaluation of a Coated Foam Catalytic Reactor for the Direct CO2-to-Methanol Synthesis Process

The era of considering carbon dioxide (CO2) as a waste stream has passed. New methods utilising CO2 feedstock are currently the focus extensive research efforts. A fixed-bed reactor containing commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst washcoated on Cu foam was used for synthesis methanol through direct hydrogenation. Catalytic activity tests in this were conducted at reaction pressures 30 and 50 bar, temperatures range 190–250 °C, weight hourly space velocities (WHSV) 1.125–2.925 NL gcat−1 h−1. best performance recorded bar pressure: conversion selectivity 27.46% 82.97%, respectively, obtained 240 °C 1.125 Increasing WHSV to 2.925 h−1 resulted twofold increase time yield (WTY) 0.18 gMeOH decrease 70.55%. results presented investigation provide insight into bench-scale which mass transfer limitations non-negligible demonstrate that metal foams promising support structures hydrogenation towards production.

The methanol conversion at 190 °C was 58.0%; however, the methanol conversion increased by 65.9% under the electric discharge.
